40 College Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Three Years Ago

pumpernickelspice:

  1. Don’t order Blanchard’s chicken caesar wrap for lunch and dinner every day for the first month of school—you’ll never want to eat it again.
  2. If you want to get that moho chop, just do it. Your hairstyle isn’t indicative of your sexual orientation.
  3. Don’t hold off—audition for that a cappella group you’ve always wanted to be in. It will change your life.
  4. Do not take three labs in one semester. You will cry always.
  5. Adopt a little sister to hang out with.
  6. You’re probably really good at something you’ve never tried before. Take a chance on something. No time spent learning is time wasted.
  7. J-term is the coolest. Even if you don’t want to take classes, just enjoy the opportunity to be on campus without stress.
  8. Spontaneity is the spice of college. You’re hungry at 2am? Go to the diner for a milkshake and loaded home fries.
  9. Speaking of which…calories don’t count unless you want them to count. You’re going to gain some weight in college. Just let it go, try to maintain balanced diet, but most importantly eat what tastes good to you.
  10. Speaking of which…El Guanaco is the food of the gods.
  11. Go to the library. Believe it or not, it’s very helpful for productivity.
  12. You know that professor you really didn’t like? Give them an honest but constructive evaluation. Simply writing hateful comments isn’t going to make you feel any better, and it’s not going to make the professor a better teacher.
  13. …And that professor you loved? Make sure they get your feedback too. Write a nice thank-you letter. Fun fact: most faculty members have a special box for nice emails and cards from students, which they go to when they’re stressed or in need of a pick-me-up.
  14. Find something to be passionate about.
  15. You know that person you just broke up with? Move on. Just move on, and enjoy being single. It will give you time to figure yourself out.
  16. Take a walk around upper lake with a friend you don’t know well.
  17. Feminism is cool, no matter what your friends from home say.
  18. Don’t spend hours slaving over your chemistry class. You might fail, and that’s okay. Just do the best you can and then move on. In the long run it’s not going to make that much of a difference in your life.
  19. As hard as it may be to accept, you’re probably not going to make a profound difference in the world. If you really want to better someone’s life, start with the communities surrounding Mount Holyoke. Go out and do some good.
  20. Being sassy is okay. Being mean is not.
  21. Some of the five college certificates are really cool. Check them out!
  22. Throw a party and let it accidentally turn into a rager…because why not?
  23. Mistakes make for fun memories.
  24. Awkward experiences also make for fun memories. Write them down so you remember them later.
  25. Take a summer job that doesn’t pay well. You’ll have less money, but you’ll gain a world of experience.
  26. Recognize your privilege.
  27. Work hard, but don’t forget to let yourself have fun. Go to that party, even if you’re tired or have too much work to do. You deserve to have fun. Added bonus: you’ll probably make new friends.
  28. Keep a happy jar in your room. Each day, write down good things that happened to you and deposit them into said happy jar.
  29. Be warned: two drinks from the Tunnel Bar will get you drunker than you’ve ever been in your life.
  30. Get to know your housekeepers.
  31. You will be a very different person in four years. You will be much more enlightened, and therefore much angrier.
  32. Don’t be afraid to talk to people you normally wouldn’t talk to. That includes professors. They’re really cool.
  33. Even if it feels awkward, smile at strangers. Maybe throw them a compliment too. You never know when someone will need a confidence boost.
  34. Take that photography class you’ve always wanted to take. Don’t buy into the “you have five more semesters to fit it into your schedule” crap. You’ll just keep pushing it off and the opportunity will pass.
  35. Don’t do things that you don’t enjoy. Don’t hang out with people who are always bringing you down.
  36. Forgiveness is important, but never underestimate the importance of sticking up for yourself.
  37. Kindness will get you far.
  38. Don’t doubt yourself. Take the lead. If you don’t, no one will.
  39. Over the next four years you will make the best friends imaginable. Don’t let go of them, no matter what.
  40. Enjoy every single minute of the time you have left. It will go by way too fast.

Nerd Lyfe: Stars: my religion ›

pumpernickelspice:

My religion isn’t written down in a book. It’s something that comes from what I can see.

Talking about religion makes me uncomfortable, mostly because I don’t fit under a specific label and it’s hard for me to explain my beliefs. I don’t know if I believe in God; but somehow I don’t feel like I…

I couldn’t have said this better myself.

My friend Steph takes the prettiest pictures.
